Strictly Come Dancing 2017: Bosses ‘horrified’ after judges axe Aston Merrygold

One of the BBC show’s biggest shock eliminations ever has created an enormous viewer backlash, as reportedly predicted by terrified producers.

The JLS singer, 29, was consistently one of the most-praised on this year’s series, both in technique and showmanship alongside his professional partner Janette Manrara.

But the television personality was left devastated when he ended up in the bottom two alongside The Saturdays’ singer Mollie King and AJ Pritchard following his lacklustre performance.

When Aston was given the ultimate boot by deciding-vote Shirley Ballas, 57, and the blonde contestant was saved for a second week running, fans raged on Twitter.

Now, it has been revealed that the show’s team were reportedly scared what the sudden twist would mean for the series going forward.

A show insider told The Sun: “Behind the scenes, the crew were left open-mouthed by the decision and feared it would spark a bad reaction from fans.

“Of course the public vote is a major factor but ultimately the judges make the final call.”

The source went on to admit that staff were even “annoyed” by the decision made on their own show.

They shared: “Some of the production team were totally horrified and even annoyed to see such a good dancer get the boot when there is so much more of the series left.

“It’s the biggest shock in the show’s history, without a doubt.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
