Goals from Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku had reversed Manchester United’s fortunes after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting bagged the opener for Stoke.
And Choupo-Moting headed home a corner in the second half to level for Mark Hughes’ side, who rattled United throughout.
Jose Mourinho’s men had gone into the clash with three wins from three, having not conceded in the top flight.
But Choupo-Moting struggled off Eric Bailly to tap in the opener from six yards out.
Paul Pogba’s deflected header off Rashford levelled the tie before the before, after which Lukaku made it 2-1 to the Red Devils when converting his own rebounded effort.
But United couldn’t hold on as they were stunned by a deep corner – Choupo-Moting this time beating Phil Jones to find the net.
Lukaku missed a golden chance to put United back ahead but shinned over Anthony Martial’s centre on 80 minutes.
And only a scrambled Jack Butland save in stoppage time prevented Kurt Zouma’s misdirected header from a corner creeping over the line.
