THE Cairns Stingers will be playing for a club stalwart tomorrow in their annual clash with the Townsville Sharks at Cardwell.
Two Stingers teams will travel south to take on the Sharks in the over-45 and the over-35 divisions of the AFL Masters.
The over-35s’ game has long been played for the Chapman Family Cup between the two teams but the over-45s introduced the Jatzy Cup in 2017.
The Jatzy Cup has been named after long-time Stingers footballer Geoff Donnelly who will not play this weekend as he is in hospital.
Cairns have won the trophy — awarded to the city with the superior points aggregate across the over-35 and over-45 games — the past five years at Cardwell.
Stingers coach Gav Moyle says the team will be playing for their mate as well as keeping their impressive winning streak going.
“The Townsville boys have never won it so there is that pressure on us, we will see how we roll,” Moyle said.
“We have brought in Tommy Mooka and Swainey Sagiba who are still very capable players in the AFL Cairns competition.
“They should go well in the Masters.”
