Stanley Johnson makes Indian Maharaja gaffe on The Real Marigold Hotel – watch here

Episode two of the show saw the group of celebrities continue their travels around India to see whether retirement would be more rewarding there than in the UK.

The group received a grand invitation from the Maharaja and were invited to mingle with Udaipur’s high society at the City Palace.

While there, they enjoyed cocktails at the palace and met local expats.

They arrived by boat to the palace which had been built by rulers of the Mewar dynasty.

The celebrities were being hosted by Shriji Arvind Singh, the 76th custodian of the ancient house of Mewar.

As the night ended, Stanley was helped onto the boat.

He then said: “And at the end of a long and successful evening, we have just been visiting the marijuana of Jaipur.”

The comment didn’t go unnoticed by viewers at home.

One viewer tweeted: “Did Stanley just say he met the Marijuana #therealmarigoldhotel.”

“Yes you now know where Boris gets it from *foot in mouth syndrome*,” posted another.

A third added: “Apparently they have all been to see ‘The Marijuana of….’ #therealmarigoldhotel.”

Later in the episode, Stanley made a friend at the local cricket club and proved that age was no barrier to the game.

The group ended the week with a trip to the northern state of the Punjab to visit one of India’s “most spectacular and holiest cities”.

As they traveled to the magnificent Golden Temple in Amritsar, Stanley made a trip back in time as he revisited somewhere he last went to in his student days.

As the senior citizens joined in in some of the traditions of the Sikh faith, they discovered the sense of giving and strength of community at the heart of Sikhism and are once again moved by the magic of India.

Syd, Bob and the Krankies headed to the local park, and realised the benefits of living in a warm country as they get stuck into exercising outdoors, and Stanley, Peter and Selina decided to tackle the language and try their hand at Hindi.

Music fan Syd searched for his own passion and discovered a love for the sitar, with his first lesson proving an unexpected challenge.

Meanwhile, Peter went in search of a “lady friend” and tried his hand at dating, and the Krankies were ready to escape the city, heading out on a rural adventure of their own by bike.

The Real Marigold Hotel continues next Wednesday on One at 9pm.
