Silent Witness viewers ‘broken’ over Jack and Nikki curveball: ‘I can’t deal with this’

Last season of the BBC drama saw Nikki (played by Emilia Fox) endure the traumatic experience of being buried alive in a horrific incident in Mexico.

The latest instalment of the long-running popular series has seen Nikki struggle to come to terms with her Post-traumatic stress disorder, but unable to understand why her colleague and close friend Jack (David Caves) has been giving her the cold shoulder.

Tonight’s conclusion of the two-parter titled Duty of Candour, finally saw the pair break down the barriers as a surprising turn of events saw Jack forced to scan Nikki’s therapy notes in an attempt to get to the bottom of her psychologist Dr Eleanor Hill’s (Wendy Kwei) involvement in the case.

Seeing the distressing words “I am dead”, which Nikki had revealed in her session during the previous episode, the normally stoic forensic scientist could barely hold himself together.

Eventually able to speak, Jack uttered: “I’m sorry Nikki.”

“I know. So am I,” she responded quietly.

While their colleague Clarissa Mullery (Liz Carr) was sitting in the room, it didn’t stop Jack from embracing Nikki in an intense hug that seemed to linger on.

Stunned by the development, viewers exploded on Twitter to share their feelings.

“I’m sorry but I just fully broke at that hug. #silentwitness,” one person declared.

Another sobbed: “I feel so sorry for Jack and Nikki right now, I’m fully bawling my eyes out here #silentwitness.”

“Can’t deal with this Nikki and Jack scene, just let them live happily ever after #SilentWitness,” a third agreed, followed by: “#SilentWitness @BBCOne @EmiliaFox @thelizcarr crying my eyes out at #Jack and #Nicky #IAmSoft xxx.”

Fans of the show continued to share their disbelief at the poignant scene, as one person confessed: “Didn’t even pay attention to who did what at the end because the scene with Nikki’s file/Jack was making me cry #SilentWitness.”

“I can understand why that Nikki/Jack/Clarissa scene was @EmiliaFox’s favourite. It was beautifully tense and emotional and incredibly well performed. However why are Jack and Nikki still not together?? #SilentWitness,” another added.

Even actress Emilia couldn’t resist posting how much she was looking forward to fans seeing the scene, writing: “Thank you so much to all who watched last night’s #SilentWitness and for the absolutely lovely things people wrote today. It made it a very special day.

“Now for the second part, one of my favourite scenes we’ve ever filmed and some hugs are definitely in order!”

Silent Witness continues Monday at 9pm on BBC One.
