Many people think keeping your home warm means turning the thermostat up.
The average temperature for UK homes in the winter is 20ºC, according to Ovo Energy.
But only the elderly or those with children need to keep their homes so warm.
The ideal temperature is in fact a slightly cooler 18 or 19ºC.
Turning the thermostat down by just one degree will save homeowners a fortune.
Npower said: “Reduce the temperature in your home by just 1ºC and you could reduce your heating bill by up to £85 each year.
“So if you’ve got yours higher than 21ºC turn the thermostat down just a little and see if you notice any difference (it’ll take a few hours to adjust).
“Remember, the recommended temperature is 18ºC – 20ºC and 21ºC for young children and older people.”
Those who find turning down the temperature makes their home far too cold could in fact have a problem with their radiators.
If radiators are full of air, they won’t be letting out heat efficiently.
But there is a simple way to fix this and it can be done without calling out a tradesman.
Bleeding a radiator is a relatively simple task homeowners should know, as if radiators aren’t giving out as much heat as they used to, it could be because air is trapped in them.
Being able to do this yourself will help save on call-out fees for workmen.
But many people are nervous to give it a go, fearing they will make a mistake and ruin their radiator.
So Npower have filmed a handy step-by-step video guide to show the best way to bleed a radiator.
Advising what to look out for, Pete, NPower engineer said: “If the bottom of the radiator is hot and the top is cold, that is usually a clear sign that you need to bleed the radiator.”
