Royal baby: What will Kate Middleton’s third child’s title be? Are they a commoner?

Kate Middleton is approaching her due date rapidly. The 36-year-old mother-of-two to Prince George, four, and Princess Charlotte, two, is now officially on royal maternity leave.

There has been much speculation over the royal baby’s name, but there is another aspect of how the child will be addressed.

What will the royal baby’s official title be? An expert has now revealed what the child will be called.

Marlene Koenig has also revealed that the child will in fact, technically, be a commoner.

The expert in European and British royalty and writer of the Royal Musings blog told Town & Country all.

If the baby is named Alice, a popular choice for a little girl, her title will be ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Alice of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’.

A little boy may be called ‘His Royal Highness Prince James of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,’ for example.

However, the titles of the royal baby’s parents could also affect what it is called.

Marlene Koenig said: “Royal children are ‘styled’ differently if they are the children of a royal duke.”

This means this baby will be known as ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Alice of of Cambridge’, which is certainly less of a mouthful.

However, unlike its parents, the child will actually not officially enjoy royal status.

Koenig added: “It sounds complicated, but in the UK, the only people who are not commoners are the Sovereign and peers of the realm, [people with titles like] Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron.”

This means the children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are technically not royals, but this is in name alone and of course they will be treated as such all the same.

A sighting in London recently has been viewed as proof by some that Kate Middleton will give birth soon.

Goings on outside The Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital – where Kate has had her previous two children – prompted some to suspect the baby could be imminent.

Kate Middleton’s maternity leave has begun, and her her final engagement was a Commonwealth event for SportAid charity held at the CopperBox area in the Olympic Park, London.

A Kensington Palace spokeswoman said: “”Today’s public engagements by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be Her Royal Highness’s last before starting her maternity leave.”

Express revealed how Kate Middleton will spend her third maternity leave.

The Duchess has taken another job despite being just weeks away from her baby’s due date

The official royal social media page said: “The Duchess of Cambridge is to become the first Royal Patron of the Victoria and Albert Museum.”
