Riverdale season 3 spoilers: Gargoyle King bombshell teased in Sabrina crossover?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix and Riverdale on The CW share the same show runner in Roberto Aguiree-Sacasa and this may explain the Riverdale references in season two, episode one of the show.

Season two of the hit Netflix show has just dropped and fans have been excited at a potential crossover between the two shows.

In the first episode of the season, Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka) is attacked by demons, who say they want to kill the “half-spawn” in reference to her.

She confronts them, to which they respond: “The half-witch must not ascend.”

The term “ascend” will be familiar to Riverdale fans from a game between the Gryphons and Gargoyles the town is obsessed with.

In the game, people have to “ascend” to join the Gargoyle King, mirroring the scenes in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fans took to Twitter to moan about the references from what they see as an inferior show.

One user said: “I’m getting little Riverdale vibes from the second part of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. That is not a good thing!”

Other fans welcomed a potential crossover between the shows, with one Twitter user saying: “I’m just sitting here wondering when Riverdale and the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are going to come together and make a spin off.”

Another added: “Am I the only one to notice that the Dark Lord in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the Gargoyle King in Riverdale are practically the same creature?”

There are huge similarities between the two characters, which could mean that characters from both programmes could meet in a standoff with the Dark Lord and Gargoyle King as the same threat.

The identity of the Gargoyle King remained a mystery until Tall Boy (Scott McNeil) was unmasked as the creature by Jughead Jones (Cole Spouse). However, he is potentially not the only Gargoyle King.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season two ends with the so-called ‘fright club’ of Sabrina, Harvey (Ross Lynch), Theo (Lachlan Wilson) and Roz (Jaz Sinclair) pledging to head into Hell and retrieve Nicholas (Gavin Leatherwood).

Nicholas had previously bound Lucifer Morningstar (Luke Cook) inside him to prevent the Dark Lord from unleashing the apocalypse on Greendale and the Earth.

Lilith (Michelle Gomez), who has become the Dark Lady herself now that Lucifer is banished, had sent Nicholas into Hell with the Dark Lord after Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo) cast a sleeping spell on him.

Nicholas and Sabrina’s love had been previously tested in the finale after Lucifer revealed that he had told him to get close to Sabrina.

However, Nicholas told her that he had fallen in love with her after all. Sabrina initially distrusts Nicholas because of this revelation, but by the end is literally ready to go to Hell and back for him.

Riverdale in on a break until Wednesday April 17 when episode 18 airs.

Season three has five episodes left, which will air weekly when Riverdale is back on.

Newly released photos for Riverdale season three show Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) enter a boxing match and the images suggest he will not exit unscathed.

Archie is seen squaring up to an older-looking fighter and is then seen with a big gash on the left side of his face.

Riverdale season three, episode 18 is released on Wednesday 17 April on The CW in the US, and Thursday morning at 9am on Netflix in the UK.
