Racing NSW has approved dual jockey-trainer licences which means Melbourne Cup winning hoop Michelle Payne can now ride the horses she trains if she wants to run them in NSW.
The new rule (LR56) comes into effect from January 1 after Racing NSW were initially reluctant about it due to possible integrity issues.
Racing NSW CEO Peter V’landys said without Payne’s fight and determination the rule change may not have come into effect.
“Racing NSW considers the integrity of thoroughbred racing to be paramount at all times and must be always the first factor satisfied before any change,” V’landys said.
“Accordingly, the board of Racing NSW received a report which provided confidence that any integrity concerns previously raised, had been addressed by the introduction of LR56.
“Racing NSW received submissions from several interstate dual licence holders, led by Michelle Payne, who explained the benefits of allowing dual licenses.
“Racing NSW determined that by allowing jockeys to transition into a training career while continuing to compete as a jockey, will provide a sustainable business model for these riders and allow them to continue to have a career within the racing industry.”
There are some fine print points that say a person can’t hold a dual license for more than five years to encourage them to make a full transition into training.
The dual license holder also can’t train more than five horses but must ride more than 24 times a season.
The dual license holder also cannot ride in a race if they have more than one horse in it.
Meanwhile, the ATC also had its own announcement on Tuesday regarding the Sydney Cup in the autumn.
Connections of horses that run first, second and third in The Metropolitan, Perth Cup, Auckland Cup, Adelaide Cup and Manion Cup will receive a bonuses if their horses win or place in the Sydney Cup.
Owners will get an extra $ 100,000 and trainers $ 50,000.
ATC chairman Matthew McGrath said the bonuses aimed to attract bigger fields for the staying event.
“In recent years we have significantly increased prizemoney for the Schweppes Sydney Cup and this bonus system is further recognition of our focus on providing more incentives for stayers and their connections,” McGrath said.
Saturday racing this weekend returns to Warwick Farm with the highlight of the card being the December Handicap.
