Queen Elizabeth’s favourite country where she ‘lead a normal life’ revealed

Queen Elizabeth II, 91, has visited a number of countries during her reign and is the most well-travelled monarch in history, beating Queen Victoria.

Due to her role as Queen as well as Head of the Commonwealth, it makes sense that she has travelled extensively to promote good relations between countries.

One of the countries she has visited the most is Canada, travelling to the destination 27 times as part of the Commonwealth.

Yet one country she has visited before is thought to be her favourite country due to the fond memories she has had there.

It is thought to be the only place where she felt she could live without the pressure of being next in line to the throne.

The Queen has often told of her love of Malta, having lived there for two years with Prince Philip shortly after they married.

They lived at Villa Guardamancia on the island between 1949 and 1951 as a newlywed couple and is the only foreign country she has ever lived in.

This was due to Prince Philip being stationed there as a Navy officer at the time.

Of course, this was before she was crowned Queen which happened just a few years later. She was forced to return to the UK when her father’s health deteriorated.

She previously asked to see the villa again in 2007 when she visited but the current owners, the family of Guze Schembri, refused.

Despite having Charles, who was one at the time, he stayed in the UK during this period.

Lady Pamela, one of the Queen’s bridesmaids, previously revealed the joy the Queen found on the island.

She told the MailOnline: “The Princess really loved Malta because she was able to lead a normal life, wander through the town and do some shopping.

“It was the only place that she was able to live the life of a naval officer’s wife, just like all the other wives.

“It was wonderful for her and it’s why they have such a nostalgia for Malta.”

Queen Elizabeth returned to the island on a number of occasions; in 1992 for a state visit, in 2007 for their diamond anniversary and in 2015 for a Commonwealth meeting.

There are a few countries that the Queen has never visited during her reign.

One of those is Israel, due to political tensions in the region.

She has also never visited Greece since becoming the Queen.

Prince Philip was forced to flee the country as a child with his family after his father was at risk of being killed.
