Puyo Puyo Tetris REVIEW: Is this the best game on Nintendo Switch?

Puyo Puyo Tetris might just be the best game on .

It doesn’t have the wow factor of something like Zelda Breath of the Wild, and it certainly won’t live on as long in the memory.

But when you do finally solve all the shrines and find every Kurok seed, Puyo Puyo Tetris will still be there, tempting you with just one more game.

Puyo Puyo Tetris breathes new life into two timeless releases that are just as much fun to play now as they first launched.

It blends the colourful chain popping action of Puyo Puyo with the classic line clearing gameplay found in Tetris, and bizarrely it works really well, regardless of the game mode.

And if there’s one thing Puyo Puyo Tetris has a lot of, it’s game modes…

You can play traditional games of Puyo Puyo or Tetris; versus matches against friends, the computer or online; timed challenge boards; a Party modes with special items; and countless merger modes that actually bring both games together.

It’s even got a story mode that will teach you the basics of the crossover gameplay, but only after boring you with endless dialogue. Thank goodness for the skip button!

You probably don’t need me to tell you that both Puyo Puyo and Tetris are great individual puzzle games, but what you might not realise is how well they work together.

Swap mode is a particular favourite. The game switches between Tetris and Puyo Puyo at regular intervals, which means you’ve got to manage two boards.

You might be really good at Tetris, but can end up losing after a bad spell on Puyo Puyo. Good players will line up their final moves as boards switch over, which is something that will net you huge scores and big combos.

Fusion mode, meanwhile, sees both Puyos and Tetriminos fall on the same board, and is every bit as frantic and thrilling as you can imagine.

The sheer number of game modes and potential gameplay variations means there’s bound to be something for someone, even if you only like Tetris.

Much like , Puyo Puyo Tetris feels like a game that was made for the Nintendo Switch.

It’s the sort of game that you can play anywhere, with anyone and for any amount of time, whether that’s a quick solo session on the way to work, or a two hour versus marathon against your friend on the TV.

It may not be as revered as Zelda Breath of the Wild, or as high profile as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but Puyo Puyo Tetris feels just as essential.

Utterly addictive and a delight to play, Puyo Puyo Tetris proves that some mash-ups really can work.
