It was generally considered that the 32-year-old actress would not be returning to the role that made her a household name.
Knightley played Elizabeth Swan in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies from 2003 to 2007.
After she and Orlando Bloom took a break from the franchise by not appearing in the fourth outing, On Stranger Tides, the two actors are now back for Salazar’s Revenge.
Knightley appears for a brief moment, back in a Georgian dress that looks similar to the one she wore in The Curse of the Black Pearl.
Fans of the franchise will remember at the conclusion of the third outing, At World’s End, her husband Bloom’s Will Turner had to become the captain of the Flying Dutchman after the demise of Davy Jones.
So Will left Elizabeth with their baby son, who’s now all grown up in Salazar’s Revenge as Henry Turner, played by Brenton Thwaites.
The new film sees Henry trying to reconnect with his father, as he struggles to break a curse preventing him from the reunion.
The new Pirates of the Caribbean film sees Johnny Depp return as Jack Sparrow, as he’s hunted by Javier Bardem’s Salazar who, as gathered by the title, is seeking revenge.
Franchise regulars Kevin McNally and Geoffrey Rush also return as Gibbs and Barbossa, while Skins’ Kaya Scodelario plays a feisty astronomer called Carina.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge is released in UK cinemas on May 26.
