Phillip Schofield speechless as Martin Lewis takes swipe at This Morning host

Phillip Schofield, 59, was on hand to present the first This Morning of the week, having just had a week off to coincide with what would have been the half-term break for schools. Joining him in the studio was co-host Holly Willoughby, 39, with the pair speaking with Martin Lewis, 48, via video link to adhere to social distancing measures. They spoke with him several times throughout the show to get his advice on ITV viewers’ money woes. However, in doing so, he took a swipe at his colleague’s age which left the presenter lost for words.

The beginnings of the conversations were to address viewers concerns about mortgage and rent payments during the coronavirus crisis.

Giving some advice to those who have been using these measures, the financial advisor said: “They will be able to track if you’ve had a payment holiday.

“We don’t quite know the impact, but it is likely to have at least a minor, detrimental effect in some cases of you getting a mortgage or you getting other credit in future.”

Martin urged those watching at home only to take one if they really need to before he was asked a question by Holly, to which he gave a response which left Phillip speechless.

“Should people be looking to reduce their mortgage repayments? Cutting the cost of their mortgage?” Holly asked.

Martin replied: “That’s the no-brainer right now. UK interest rates are at their lowest for 325 years.

“Even Phil doesn’t remember that far back,” he said as he took his swipe at the presenter, which left him laughing rather than coming back with a reply.

The financial advisor then said: “I’m going to carry on so you can’t interrupt me with a comeback,” as his colleague was utterly stumped by the age quip.

“Our editor’s just shouted out ‘common,’” the presenter told viewers, with Holly adding: “Somebody just said something outrageous in my ear.”

The host burst into hysterics as Phillip remarked: “Good heavens,” but his colleague said she understood the backlash.

“It’s supposed to dilute the wine, but I like really cold white or rosé wine,” she added, to which her co-host asked: “Well, you know what you do?”

“Drink it quicker,” she replied, and viewers also shared their thoughts on social media after the presenter’s confession.

One wrote on Twitter: “Of course! it’s luscious sat in the sun drinking rosé with a Big ice cube in it!”

Another added on the micro-blogging platform: “I’m with Holly I cannot drink it without ice & must be a large wine glass.”

Whilst a third commented: “I normally put the wine in the freezer for 3-4 hrs before serving, it’s ice-cold and easier to drink.”

Rounding off the conversation, Phillip suggested his co-host freeze grapes and then put them into her beverage.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
