Oscars 2017: La La Land WRONGLY named Best Picture after DISASTROUS mix-up with Moonlight

The cast and filmmakers from the movie rushed to the stage to accept their award after Bonnie and Clyde co-stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced it as the winner of the prestigious category.

After many of the producers said their thank you speeches after scooping the biggest honour of the night, it was announced there had been a major error.

The film’s producer Jordan Horowitz told the audience: “No there has been a mistake. Moonlight you guys won Best Picture.”

As the audience gasped in horror at the terrible mistake, he continued: “This is not a joke.”

The card from the envelope was then held up to the screen to confirm the winner of the award.

Warren came back on stage to explain the awful mishap: ”I want to tell you what happened I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land and that is why I took such a long look at Faye and at you.”

Host of the evening, Jimmy Kimmel, had the final word and said he “blamed Steve Harvey for this” – referring to his infamous mistake of announcing the wrong Miss Universe winner in 2015.

The shocking mishap resulted in viewers taking to Twitter to express their utter disbelief at the heart-stopping moment.

“That is the most awkward thing I have ever saw. I do want to see moonlight though when it is available to rent. #Oscars,” commented one user.

Another wrote: “What the hell! Seriously, this s**t again! Read and get the winners right! #Oscars #Oscars2017 #Moonlight #LALALAND.”

“At least LA LA LAND can put ‘Best Picture (for a minute)’ on the DVD box cover. #Oscars,” a third added.

One shocked viewer went on: “Whoa! What. On. Earff. #Oscars.”
