Melania Trump turned 48 today, but the First Lady – who is married to US President Donald Trump, 71, – may end up disappointed on her special day.
Donald admitted this morning that he had not purchased a birthday present to mark his wife’s special day. Donald has a net worth of several billion.
However, apparently it was not money that held the multi-billionaire back from buying his wife a gift, but time constraints.
He told hosts on Fox News programme Fox & Friends that he was “too busy to be running around looking for presents”.
Appearing on the show at 8am American time today, he was the first person to bring up his wife’s birthday, adding he had chosen to do the appearance on that day.
He said: “Good morning and I picked a very very special day because it’s Melania’s birthday.
“So I said let’s do it on Melania’s birthday so happy birthday to Melania.”
Asked what he had bought his wife for a birthday present, Donald replied that he had not got her one.
He said: “Well I better not get into that because I may get in trouble. Maybe I didn’t get her so much.”
Defending himself, he said: “Well I got her a beautiful card and some beautiful flowers.”
He also gave a reason for his lack of present giving, claiming he was “too busy”.
He said: “You know I’m very busy to be running around looking for presents.”
Donald then attempted to change the subject, talking about Melania’s preparations for the French state visit of Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.
“She did a fantastic job with France. I tell you what, the people of France were spellbound by what happened with their great President Emmanuel.”
In a video posted last week, Melania grimaced as Donald tried to hold her hand.
Melania wore a white suit with a belted waist for the appearance, with a matching white wide brimmed hat.
However, Melania for some reason seemed intent on keeping her hand to herself in video footage which portrays the awkward moment.
The camera pans in to show Donald reaching his hand towards his wife’s hand, little finger first.
However, she seems to swipe her hand away from him, reaching it in towards her side.
Donald, however, will not be deterred, and once again reaches his fingers towards his wife.
She holds her hand stiff and refuses to return the hand hold, but does not pull her hand away.
