Although the 2004 teen smash did technically get a sort-of-sequel with the made-for-TV flop Mean Girls 2 in 2011, whispers of a proper full-cast comeback have continued to swirl.
Now, Chabert – who played Gretchen Wieners, as well as Eliza in The Wild Thornberrys – has explained what the current state of play is… and it’s not particularly good news.
The 34-year-old has told Fox News that there are currently no concrete plans in place at all – but she’s certainly open to suggestions.
“I honestly have no idea if it’ll happen,” she admitted.
“I don’t have any information. Everyone always asks me that.
“But, I would love for a Mean Girls 2 to happen. I think it would be a really fun movie to revisit those characters and see where they’re at today.”
The actress added: “I feel like my character would have lots of babies and have an heir to the Toaster Strudel empire.
“I’m open to it. I think it would be really fun.”
She’s not the first star to throw her hat in the ring for a new movie: Rachel McAdams agreed last year.
“I loved that movie. I love Tina Fey. I love the girls,” she said last year whilst promoting Doctor Strange.
“We got to have a reunion at a photo shoot a couple of years ago and it was over like that and it wasn’t enough. I was back in it.”
Lindsay Lohan, meanwhile, had said Tina Fey suggested “an older version where they’re all housewives and they’re all cheating. That would be really funny. I’ll harass Tina to write it.”
