AUSTRALIA has won both the men’s and women’s race walk events but the joy was tainted by the cruellest of cuts for a fellow Aussie athlete.

Jemima Montag stormed home to win the women’s 20km race walk event, though her joy was somewhat tempered by witnessing her teammate Claire Tallent being disqualified when in the lead.

Earlier Dane Bird-Smith claimed gold in the men’s race.

With the local crowd willing him on Bird-Smith produced an inspired surge to shrug off his rival and give Australia the perfect start to the athletics program.

After the race Bird-Smith paid tribute to the crowd, ‘that last 500m I cannot thank those guys enough, as I came around the bend they went ballistic. It was bloody unreal.

‘I reckon I’ll go for a dip in the ocean right now, anyone who wants to come for a swim and celebrate, bring a beer, jump in with me — let’s go!’
