Mary Poppins sequel: When is it out, new TRAILER, cast – Will Julie Andrews cameo?

She’s practically perfect in every way.

The most famous nanny (flying or otherwise) is back on TV for Boxing Day and the best news of all is that there will finally be a sequel, more than fifty years after the original captured the world’s imagination.

The new movie will star two of Hollywood’s hottest talents but also brings one of the iconic original actors from the 1964 smash hit back to help a family that is once more desperately in need.

Will Julie Andrews really return to one of her most famous roles?

WHEN WILL THE MARY POPPINS SEQUEL BE RELEASED?

Mary Poppins Returns is due to hit cinemas worldwide on Deecember 25, 2018.

WHO DOES IT STAR?

Emily Blunt will play Mary Poppins with Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda as her new male sidekick, Jack, but you may need a spoonfull of sugar at the sad news one iconic star will not be coming back…

WHAT ABOUT JULIE ANDREWS?

Director Rob Marshall revealed the 81-year-old star would not be taking part.

He said: “Julie will always be, for me and for everybody, the most astonishing performance as Mary Poppins, winning the Oscar and bursting onto the scene so brilliantly. But Emily is the perfect person to carry the torch.”

WHAT DOES JULIE ANDREWS THINK?

Andrews said: “Emily Blunt is going to play Mary Poppins and I am a great fan. She is terrific and a perfect pick.”

“This is Emily’s show, and I really want it to be Emily’s show. I don’t want it to be, ‘Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.’ I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.’”

WHO WILL BE BACK?

Dick Van Dyke, the original Bert, is set to appear in Mary Poppins Returns, but not in the same role. Instead, the 91-year-old will play a cameo role as an older version of Mr Dawes Jr, the son of the director of the bank where Mr Banks worked.

WILL HE DO THAT ACCENT?

Recently Van Dyke admitted: “Someone should have told me I needed to work on my Cockney accent. Nearly everyone in the Mary Poppins cast was a Brit but no one said anything.

“Years later I asked Julie Andrews ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ – she said it was because I was working so hard.”

WHO ELSE STARS IN THE SEQUEL?

Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer will play teh grown up versions of Michael and Jane Banks. Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Angela Lansbury will also appear.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The new movie will follow a much darker storyline than the original after Michael Banks’ wife dies and he is left to raise their three children.

Blunt added: “She (Mary Poppins) takes on a grieving family. So it is quite a profound backdrop for her to re-appear.”
