Mary: I was naughty…so I learnt to cook

Speaking at the annual Chatsworth Country Fair in Derbyshire, Mary said: “I got into cooking because I was rather naughty at school. When I was 13 you could either do Latin and maths or you could do cooking, so I naturally chose cooking.”

Mary, who gave demonstrations to the crowd, called for the return of school cookery lessons so youngsters learn how to make healthy meals.

She said: “I think it is very sad that we don’t have cooking in schools because it means that there are people who are going to leave school and haven’t got the knowledge. They could cook maybe eight things, inexpensively, and when they go off on an apprenticeship or to live on their own, they can cook food that is not junk.”

During her presentation, Mary prepared a pavlova dessert – proving it had the correct consistency by tipping the mixing bowl over her assistant Lisa’s head.

She also told how she met her dance hero, Strictly judge Darcey Bussell, and told the ex-ballerina she had named her beloved dog after her.

“I have Darcey, who is a working cocker, and I named her after Darcey Bussell because she is very beautiful and she moves so beautifully,” Mary said.

“When I went to watch Strictly, I told Darcey and she was quite flattered.”
