Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk should have had Southampton release clause – John Collins

That is the opinion of pundit and former Celtic midfielder John Collins.

Van Dijk penned a new six-year contract at Southampton in May 2016 but is now wanting out of St Mary’s.

He handed in a transfer request at Southampton last week in order to force through a move away from the south coast club.

However, Southampton are standing firm and maintain he will not be sold before the transfer window shuts on August 31.

Liverpool have been interested in the Dutch defender throughout the summer but Southampton threatened to report their approach in June to the Premier League.

The Reds publicly ended their interest in Van Dijk but rumours have failed to go away and he is said to be keen on joining up with Jurgen Klopp.

Collins believes the 26-year-old should have thought twice about signing a new deal or perhaps had a release clause put into the contract.

“Virgil van Dijk, I know Virgil very well,” Collins said on talkSPORT.

“He’s a good boy but I don’t know why he signed this six-year extension last year to be perfectly honest.

“When you sign an extension six months earlier, unless your agent has got a buyout clause put in it and a buying club makes it, then his agent’s not done a good job for him.

“It looks like Southampton are going to dig their heels in and it looks like Liverpool are going to dig their heels in.”
