Kia’s Electric Concept Car for CES Is Really the Niro EV in Disguise

With less than a week to go until CES kicks off in Las Vegas, Kia has laid out its plans for the event. In addition to CES-typical future stuff such as autonomous-driving tech and a new in-car 5G data connection, Kia will show off an all-new, fully electric concept car. That last bit has our interest piqued.

In teaser photos of the concept, we can see that the EV is a hatchback with aggressive front and rear lighting. Some of the LED accents recall those in Kia’s new Stinger GT sports sedan, while others, such as the Y-shaped elements below the main lights, mark new design territory for the brand.

These cool details appear to be applied onto a familiar shape: that of the Niro hatchback/crossover. The door cutouts, the shape of the hatch, and the front fender outlines all appear to be dead ringers for the production Niro’s—albeit hitched to an electric powertrain. This isn’t terribly surprising; the Niro shares its platform with Hyundai’s Ioniq, which is offered with hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains. The Niro already is available with the first two, so it only makes sense that it would add an EV.

We’ll have details on the electric concept and its “never seen before human-machine interface” once it makes its debut at CES. But let’s hope the eventual production version takes not just its electric powertrain, but also some design cues, from this show car.
