Kate Garraway fights tears as she issues warning to GMB fans in heartbreaking Derek update

Kate, 53, was back on hand to present Good Morning Britain, just days after the news broke her husband Derek, 53, had become the longest case of coronavirus in Britain. The television star’s spouse remains in intensive care after being put into a coma to try and suppress the disease earlier this year. With the number of COVID cases starting to rise across the country, the newsreader made a plea to those watching the ITV show at home to follow the rules as they don’t know the “devastation” the illness can cause.

Following a discussion with Dr Hilary Jones, 67, on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s, 55, latest press conference, Kate said: “Derek’s mum and dad haven’t been able to see him.”

Fighting back the tears, she added: “I think if they can go six months without giving a hug to their son – making me feel emotional – who is so desperately ill, then the rest of us can make it through.

“I have huge sympathy with people who are fed up with it.

“I think if you haven’t been directly affected by it, you haven’t seen the devastation but your life has been devastated; your livelihood, your ability to feel a sense of joy then, of course, you’re going to feel frustrated.

“But it does make me tempted to show a picture of Derek in his current state and say you don’t want this in your life,” the presenter continued, issuing the warning to viewers.
