Journeyman review: Paddy Considine’s tale of boxing heartbreak

The T-shirts are probably being printed already. Journeyman doesn’t land the punches you’d expect from a boxing movie.

In his second film as a director, Paddy Considine plays Matty, an ageing champion who suffers an unexplained brain injury in his final fight.

Performances are excellent but, as this is essentially a disability weepie, I needed to know the details of his injury.

It might be nitpicking but it stopped me from engaging.

Considine wants us to sympathise with Matty’s wife (Jodie Whittaker) but, as recovery is not impossible (in fact it seems a strong possibility), she just seems cruel for quickly writing him off.

I admired Considine’s refusal to play by the rules but this is crying out for someone with a white coat, clipboard and a grave look.
