Jorge Linares v Luke Campbell branded world title mismatch: He'll murder him!

Campbell won Olympic gold in the bantamweight division at London 2012 before turning professional a year later.

The 29-year-old has just one defeat on his 18-fight pro record, losing a split decision to Yvan Mendy in December 2015, but has since worked his way up the lightweight rankings.

His most recent outing saw him record an impressive TKO win over Darleys Perez on the undercard of Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko, securing the No1 challenger spot in the WBA’s eyes.

And now he will face Linares, Venezuela’s famous champion, whose last two fights saw him beat Anthony Crolla in Manchester.

Another British fighter stands between him and a title defence and while Campbell is a highly rated fighter, the majority of fans believe Linares will have too much ability for the him.

“Like Luke Campbell, Hull lad, one of our own but think Linares is too good for him on this one,” wrote Dan Noguera on Twitter.

Tom Ridley added: “Happy to see Luke Campbell getting his title shot but I reckon he’s out of his depth against Linares.”

A third, James Gleave‏, even claimed the fight could get dangerous!

“Feel tight on Luke Campbell, linares will murder him,” he wrote.

But Campbell himself, fully aware of the size of the challenge, believes he is ready to head to LA and take on the champion.

“It’s an honour to be fighting Jorge Linares in one of the biggest fights in the division,” Campbell said.

“I’ve worked my way from Olympic champion to the No 1 spot in the WBA and WBC rankings and I feel now is the time to take my chance.

“All the pressure is on Jorge headlining back in the States and I’m so confident.

“I have tremendous respect for Jorge and this is going to be an unbelievable fight, but this is the opportunity I have been waiting for as a professional and will take it.”
