Jane, 54 – who appeared on today’s Loose Women alongside Coleen Nolan, Christine Lampard and Ayda Field – quizzed Paula on “why she thought that she’d be different to how the prisoner has treated people in the past”, with her insisting that “things are going to get a whole lot more awful” if and when Charles is eventually released from jail.
Jane pointed out the fact that Charles – who is often referred to as the ‘most violent prisoner in Britain’ – has had engagements and marriages before, but he’s never followed through with any of them.
She then proceeded to ask Paula: “How can you be different?” before she went on to say: “I still don’t get it and I think he’s going to be institutionalised.”
Paula – who continued to insist that her love for the attacker is “genuine” and that although she didn’t plan on getting married behind bars, she believes that people don’t know the real Charles – refused to come to blows with Jane over the whole thing and remained calm and collected as she discussed how the rest of her family felt about the engagement.
She told the panel, after Jane pointed out that she would be “devastated” if her daughter had done the same thing as Paula: “My mother is concerned, I’m her only daughter. All my family have got reservations.
“However, I’m 36 and I’m not a fool. This is a huge thing and I’ve received huge criticism. I have genuine love for this man and I didn’t expect any of this whatsoever.”
Jane had previously said that she found the relationship “odd at best”, with her telling viewers: “At best it’s odd, at worst you’re looking for fame. There’s a million questions, I’m more fascinated to what’s going on in your head as to why it’s happened.”
“I’m no psychologist, but are you in love with his unavailability?” she added, as Paula insisted that that wasn’t the case at all.
Despite the majority of viewers on Twitter agreeing with Jane, others called the panellist “grumpy”.
One person moaned: “Grumpy Jane Moore really can’t get her head around this #loosewomen,” as another added: “@loosewomen Jane, really don’t like how judgemental you have been throughout this show! Really let women down!”
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
