VICTORIAN keeper Sam Harper has been hospitalised after being struck by South Australian batsman Jake Lehmann’s bat on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

Harper, 20, was struck by Lehmann in his follow through after the left-hander pulled a short ball off spinner Jon Holland.

The promising young keeper, despite wearing a helmet, collapsed to the ground in the 49th over and, after appearing distressed from the blow, was assisted from the field.

An extended lunch break was taken with Harper taken from the ground for scans at hospital. Harper, starting his sixth first-class game covering for Test keeper Matt Wade, was talking and conscious as he left the Sheffield Shield match.

Lehmann had played a lone hand against the Bushrangers as the Redbacks lost 4/88 in the morning session to be 9/168 at lunch, trailing the visitors on the first innings by 16 runs in the top-two clash.
