In last night’s episode of the baking show, the remaining 10 contestants were put to the test as they showed off their patisserie skills during bread week.
But viewers were more distracted by a short scene which saw presenter Sandi Toksvig open a purple fridge to reveal her co-host Noel Fielding inside.
The comedian crouched down in the fridge and updated the contestants on how much time they had left to present their finale bakes to judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
He announced: “Bakers, you are half way through your challenge. Half way through,” before Sandi closed the door on him.
While producers would have most likely wanted the scene to come across as light-hearted and funny, many slammed the show for sending out the wrong message to children.
One person wrote: “Why shut someone on a fridge. So irresponsible and stupid #GBBO #GBBO2017.”
“@noelfielding11 hiding in the fridge is irresponsible and could lead to child deaths from replicating #fail #GBBO,” said another.
A third commented: “Seriously, hiding in a fridge? What do health & safety have to say about that? #GBBO.”
“GBBO Great British Bake Off – Noel Fielding hiding and being shut in a fridge by Sandi Toksvig. Great message to all the kids watching,” added one outraged viewer.
Elsewhere, Noel caught the attention of viewers for another reason as many took to social media to comment on his eccentric blue shirt which looked like it featured pictures of nipples.
Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
