Game of Thrones season 7, episode 7: Who is Jon Snow's mother? Who is Lyanna Stark?

This week’s episode is titled The Dragon and the Wolf – which fans believe is a reference to Jon’s parents.

Lyanna Stark (the wolf) was revealed as Jon’s real mother in the season six finale, when Bran saw a vision of her giving birth.

While the show has stopped short of confirming who Jon’s father is, fans are convinced that it is Daenerys’ brother, Rhaegar Targaryen (the dragon).

Jon has been raised to believe that he is the illegitimate son of Ned Stark, but fans believe he could uncover the truth in the finale.

His true heritage gives him a strong claim to the Iron Throne, but could pose a problem for his blossoming romance with Daenerys, his aunt.

The finale will also see Jon confront Cersei Lannister about the oncoming army of White Walkers.

Cersei will be reunited with her brother Tyrion, while in Winterfell Arya and Sansa Stark are headed for another showdown.

Who is Lyanna Stark?

Lyanna was the daughter of Rickard Stark and the sister of Brandon, Eddard and Benjen.

She was betrothed to marry Robert Baratheon, who would go on to marry Cersei Lannister after Lyanna’s death.

Before she could be married, Lyanna attended a tourney at Harrenhal in which Rhaegar competed.

After he won, he was tasked with picking the Queen of Love and Beauty.

Instead of crowning his wife Elia Martell, he rode on and chose Lyanna to both women’s shock.

Some time later, Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna and his her away in Dorne – although some believe that she went with him willingly.

As Gilly learned in the Citadel, Rhaegar annulled his marriage in order to wed Lyanna sometime before he was killed by Robert.

She fell pregnant with his son, Jon, but died during childbirth.

Brandon and Rickard rode to King’s Landing to demand that Rhaegar’s father, King Aerys, release Lyanna.

Instead, the Mad King burned Rickard alive with wildfire and baited Brandon to strangle himself to death.

Game of Thrones season 7 concludes on Monday at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
