Game of Thrones location guide: How to visit Game of Thrones locations in Croatia

Game of Thrones uses locations from around the world to bring the world of Westeros to life. Dubrovnik in Croatia is one of the locations used as the setting of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. King’s Landing settings like the palace gardens and the location of Cersei Lannister’s (played by Lena Headey) walk of shame can be visited in Croatia.

How to visit Game of Thrones locations in Croatia

To find out the best way for tourists to visit the Game of Thrones locations, we spoke to booking platform Klook, which allows tourists to book tours around the world.

Anita Ngai, chief revenue officer at Klook, said: “Known better to Game of Thrones fans as the King’s Landing, the capital of Croatia, Dubrovnik, doubles up as the Westeros capital and is among the most popular sites for our travellers.

“Many choose to visit the Trsteno Arboretum (King’s Landing palace gardens) or stroll around the Old Town where they can relive Cersei’s walk of shame.”

Its booking platform even allows fans to relive a bit of Game of Thrones history.

She said: “Travellers can also set sail on the exact ship that Daenerys Targaryen rode on while sipping on a Dragon blood cocktail.”

However, she added that pre-booking of Game of Thrones tours is essential.

“Most travellers pre-book the Game of Thrones filming locations tour around Dubrovnik where the guide will be available on-site to point out the exact spots where scenes were shot,” the Klook spokesperson told us.

Croatia has become one of the most popular tourist destinations for Game of Thrones fans thanks to its association with King’s Landing.

When asked about the popularity of the European city, Ngai said: “With the pristine waters of the Adriatic Sea and captivating ancient walled towns peppered across the country providing a treat to the eyes, it isn’t hard to see why Game of Thrones would pick Croatia as one of the main filming locations for the series.

“Dubrovnik, in particular, is a crowd favourite. Stepping foot into the city feels like entering into medieval times.”

“Despite the Game of Thrones series taking place in a world of fantasy, it is clear to see that the story is set in a time well before contemporary designs.

“The ancient city with its well-preserved architecture that has yet to feel the impact of modernisation makes it perfect for Game of Thrones.”

Dubrovnik also is home to a number of other Game of Thrones locations.

The area around Pile Gate, for example, plays Blackwater Bay in the series, while the city of Qarth, in reality, is Lokrum Island, 600 metres off the mainland of Croatia.

The highest point of Dubrovnik is Mineeta Tower, which became the House of the Undying in Game of Thrones.

Other parts of King’s Landing like the Red Keep, however, were filmed not in Croatia but in Malta.

Game of Thrones season 8 airs on HBO in the US on Sundays 9pm ET and on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK on Mondays at 2am & 9pm BST
