Flames score big win over Canberra

THE Sydney Uni Flames have recorded their most emphatic victory of the WNBL season to extend their winning run at home to three in another charge at the top of the points ladder.

With their senior players sharing the workload between them, the Flames captured a 81-62 victory over Canberra on Thursday night in Sydney.

Coach Cheryl Chambers said the team spoke about making the most of their home court advantage prior to the match.

“In a league this tough you can’t afford to lose any advantage and playing at home and winning is important,” Chambers said.

The Flames made a strong start to the game and were never headed but Chambers said it was a “far from pretty” performance by her charges.

“We had a great first quarter but after that we were pretty scrappy,” she said.

“You get that sometimes.

“I think it was more the way the rhythm changed with Katie (Ebzery) going in and out.”

Ebzery was making her return to the court from an ankle injury which sidelined her last round but also got into foul trouble against Canberra.

She still ended the match with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists with captain Belinda Snell scoring 16 points and making 10 rebounds and four assists.

Import Asia Taylor scored 18 points and made 10 rebounds with fellow American Jen Hamson chipping in 13 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.

The Flames now head to Canberra for a rematch with the Capitals on Saturday.

This will end the Flames toughest nine days of the season so far.

During this time the Sydney side will have played four games – two at home and two on the road.

They will then have an entire week off before their next outing of the WNBL – their second game of the season against the Melbourne Boomers in Sydney.

The Flames knocked the Boomers from the top-of-the-table last round with their win over the Melbourne side at home.
