At the Oscars, they presented a gong together – and viewers were quick to point out how uncomfortable Dornan looked when Johnson poked fun.
However, it seems their friendship is so genuine after filming three raunchy movies that Johnson has hinted she wouldn’t have done them without him.
“It’s genuinely one of the fastest, closest friendships I’ve ever made in my life, just based on the amount of time we’ve actually known each other,” she told OK!
“I love Jamie, I trust him and I really couldn’t tell you if I could have done this without him.”
The star added: “He’s my dream partner and supported me, I’ve supported him.
“It’s a lot to ask of two people, of two actors, to take on these highly emotional, sexual situations, but I think we’ve done us proud.
“He’ll be my friend for the rest of my life. I adore him, I adore his wife and his gorgeous babies. They’re the most perfect family unit.”
Dornan had previously been similarly gushing about Johnson, saying: “We didn’t know each other particularly on the first one because I was late to the party, and it meant there wasn’t a lot of time to form that friendship and that dynamic between us.”
He told Heat: ”But working on this and Fifty Shades Freed [the next film] was so much better in that sense because we had gotten to know each other so well, become best friends, knew what to expect of the other – especially when you’re shooting scenes of very close intimacy.”
Fifty Shades Darker has achieved a strong box office haul since opening, although its critical reaction was overwhelmingly negative.
