At the beginning of the ITV soap, the pair appeared tense after they both dropped a bombshell that they had cheated on one another.
Carly (played by Gemma Atkinson) admitted she shared an intimate moment with her ex-boyfriend Matt, while Marlon (Mark Charnock) revealed he leaned in for a kiss with his ex-wife Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy)
However, after finding out Marlon hadn’t technically cheated as Laurel rejected him, Carly said they were “even”.
And in an attempt to move on from their troubles, she got down on one knee and asked Marlon to marry him.
But will Marlon say yes?
Explaining the surprise proposal, actress Gemma said to Digital Spy: “Deep down, Carly knows that Marlon isn’t the man for her. That’s why she’s proposing and telling herself that he is. She’s doing that whole thing of: ‘It’ll be fine, let’s get married, let’s all be happy families’.
“I think it’s a panicked decision, because she’s running out of opportunities to show Marlon how much he means to her. It’s not Marlon she has to convince, it’s herself and that’s the problem.”
Discussing Carly’s shock kiss with her ex, Gemma continued: “Carly has been having fun with her ex and spending time with him, so it was just a slip-up. In Carly’s head it was a mistake, she feels horrendous and nothing will come of it.
“Carly told Marlon because she’s a good person and she had a lot of guilt about it. She’s learned from the past that you always have to be honest. She can’t move forward in a relationship with Marlon, knowing that she’s kissed her ex-boyfriend. Her and Marlon have no secrets, so she needs to get it off her chest and make sure the relationship is still good.”
Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.
