eBay: ‘Rare’ Peter Rabbit 50p coin SOLD for £1,000 – Do you have one in your change?

eBay is full of rare and collectable items, with many Britons flocking to the site to make money from their wares.

Among the host of valuable items are plenty of rare coins, including historical coins, commemorative coins and even coins still in circulation.

Only a few reach their full asking price, but one particular 50p sold for its full buy it now price of £1,000 this week.

The coin is Beatrix Potter 50p, featuring a design of her beloved character Peter Rabbit on it.

The coin, which sold earlier this week, was listed on eBay for £1,000, and soon fetched its asking price.

Sold by eBay user “ri3cho”m the listing was titled: “Beatrix Potter 2017 – Tale of Peter Rabbit 50p coin RARE collection-circulated”.

The listing’s description gave little else away, stating: “Rare Peter Rabbit 50p from 2017. Excellent condition.”

Based in Belper, Derbyshire, the seller offered the coin with a £1.40 charge for delivery.

This particular 50p was minted in 2017 to commemorate the life of English author Beatrix Potter.

The coin was designed by Emma Noble and feature the word Peter Rabbit etched in capital letters across the top of the coin, along with an engraving of Peter’s face.

The Peter Rabbit edition was just one of the coins minted to mark the occasion, with Jemima Puddle-Duck and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle also printed in silver.

According to The Royal Mint, it is one of the most in-demand coins, with the website reading: “Struck by The Royal Mint, this coin has proved to be extremely popular with coin collectors.”

Despite its popularity, the coin isn’t actually that rare, with scarcity index Change Checker rating the Peter Rabbit 50p as common.

One of the 54 50ps currently in circulation, it had an original mintage of 9,600,000.

Regardless of their high mintage, the Beatrix Potter coins are still attracting attention from keen coin collectors, with another coin from the series making its way on to eBay this week. 

The coin featured a Mr Jeremy Fisher design, the title character in Beatrix’s 1906 novel.

The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher is all about a frog who lives in a “slippy-sloppy” house at the edge of a pond.

Commemorated on a coin, the 50p was listed on eBay with an impressive £249 starting bid.

The listing was called: “Rare Beatrix Potter 50p – Mr Jeremy Fisher 2017 – Circulated Collectors Coin.”

Describing the item, the seller wrote: “Extremely Rare 50p – Mr Jeremy Fisher. Good condition. Collectors coin.”
