Ebay: Rare ‘new pence’ 2p worth £5,000 – do you have one in your coat pocket?

Ebay is a fantastic place to find rare and valuable coins, and to sell one that you come across yourself.

You can make a considerable sum if you know what to look for, and how much it is worth to sell on.

A certain type of copper 2p coin proves especially popular on the buying and selling platform.

While 2p coins are not uncommon, what makes this specific coin popular is the unique wording on it.

Rather than “two pence”, the coin says “new pence” on it – as all coins produced between 1971 and 1981 did.

The coin in question is from 1971, the year the new pence coins began being producted, and this gives it a special status.

The seller, known as obkhan786, refers to the coin as a “unique piece of 2p coin”.

Although the coin has not sold yet, it has a total of 10 watchers checking up on its progress.

The rare 2p is listed for the whopping total sum of £4,958.47 on the auction site.

The Royal Mint website explains a little more about the unique nature of this coin.

“The United Kingdom 2p coin was introduced on 15 February 1971 with the creation of a new decimal currency system.

“The other two coins issued at this time were the 1/2p and 1p coins.

“To avoid confusion between the old and new coinage all three coins had the word ‘NEW’ incorporated into the reverse design.

“This was subsequently removed in 1982,” the website says of the distinctive make of coins.

Recently, a 50p coin sold for a huge £250 on the eBay selling website: a 2016 Beatrix Potter Mrs Tiggy Winkle 50p coin.

The 50p coin was minted in 2016, with a number of other coins featuring Beatrix Potter’s characters.

The collection celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter.
