The barmaid decided to save her son from spending time behind bars by falsely confessing to illegally selling alcohol in the Queen Vic.

In emotional scenes that saw Mick sobbing, Shirley stepped up to the plate to avoid him being sent down for Aunt Babe’s illegal scheme.

Mick’s mother calmly told him: “With a bit of luck it might even go to court, it’s my fault. I knew Babe was selling the booze and you didn’t have a clue.

“That’s why I’m finally stepping up Mick. I’m not asking you, I’m telling you son. I’m going to get you out of this mess. Whether you like it or not.”

But after the dramatic turn of events that saw Shirley turn herself in, viewers were questioning how actor Danny will now be leaving the soap after it was revealed he was having a break.

One viewer wrote: “Genuinely thought Mick was gonna take the blame and go prison….now I’m muddled on how he’s having a break #eastenders.”
