The actress will take over as the Time Lord from Peter Capaldi, who announced he was stepping down from the role earlier this year.
Fans were left divided following the news that the new Doctor would be a woman but the 35-year-old has addressed those who doubt her.
Jodie said: “I want to tell fans not to be scared by my gender.
“Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change.”
“The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one,” she continued.
The Broadchurch star added that it was “an honour” to become the Doctor, explaining: “It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be.”
Jodie, who can next be seen in BBC hospital drama Trust Me, also revealed she had to tell “a lot of lies” and use a codename to stop the news that she would be the next Time Lord leaking.
Meanwhile, new showrunner Chris Chibnall said he was “excited” to be able to finally reveal Jodie as the Doctor.
“I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman, and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away,” he commented.
“Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The 13th Doctor is on her way.”
Jodie will make her first appearance as the Doctor in a Christmas Special later this year.
