Doctor Foster season 2 finale: Writer’s original ending was COMPLETELY different

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Doctor Foster season two finale.

The BBC drama has kept many fans gripped throughout the second series and it finally came to a dramatic close with a huge shock twist.

Schoolboy Tom Foster (played by Tom Taylor) ended up running away from his feuding parents Doctor Gemma (Suranne Jones) and Simon (Bertie Carvel) after seeing his father try to kill himself.

However, Tom’s disappearance wasn’t part of writer Mike Bartlett’s plan who originally wanted the series to end on a happy note.

“The ending of the show unfolded as I was writing it,” he revealed to RadioTimes.com

Speaking about the initial storyline, Mike said: “In the plan, he’s in the car at the end. They go back to her house and get a new kitchen and try to build a life.

“It was only when I went to write it that she goes back to the car and he’s not there. But that happened very organically from what he has been through, I think.”

In this series, viewers have seen how much Tom has grown up since the show’s first instalment two years ago and now Mike revealed the schoolboy’s actions were always going to be inevitable.

Discussing the finale, the writer added: “Tom’s not a little child anymore, he’s going to make his own choices. And so hopefully it’s one of those ones which you don’t see coming but when it happens you look over the whole series and realise this has been coming the whole time.

“That’s the moment you look for as a writer when the characters start telling you what they are doing rather than you telling them.”

It is not known whether there will be a third series of Doctor Foster just yet, but Mike has teased a potential return.

Doctor Foster is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
