Creed 3: Will there be a third instalment?

Creed is the spin-off to the Rocky movies which focuses on Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, son of Apollo. Apollo is Rocky’s enemy turned friend who was killed in a boxing match in Rocky IV. The first film, Rocky and its five sequels centred on the boxing career of the eponymous Rocky Balboa played by Sylvester Stallone and has been one of the most successful movie franchises in modern box office history.

In Creed II Stallone plays an ageing Rocky who trains Adonis to fight Viktor Drago in his toughest match yet.

But Stallone has taken to social media to say Creed II will be the last time he plays Rocky.

The Hollywood actor writes: “I am reposting this because there was a technical difficulty.

“I just want to thank everyone around the whole wide world for taking the Rocky family into their hearts for over 40 years.

“It’s been my Ultimate privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character.

“Though it breaks my heart, Sadly all things must pass…and end.

“I love you Kind and generous people, and The most wonderful thing of all, is that ROCKY will never die because he lives on in you.”

However, despite Stallone not being on-board for any further Creed films, there is speculation there will be a third movie.

Steven Caple Jr directed the sequel, taking over the realm from Ryan Coogler who has shared his thoughts on where the next film could go and there is a chance that Adonis Creed doesn’t necessarily have to be the lead character.

He said during a recent interview: “That’s a good question. Who would he fight? What would take him there? Who’s in his corner?

“All these questions. I’m not sure. Is there room for Creed III? I think so, there’s definitely some hooks at the end of [Creed II] that can lead you to a Creed III.

“Would he be the lead in Creed III? Those are all questions to ask.”

One of the biggest uncertainties if there was a Creed III is whether Adonis Creed would return to the ring.

As he went through some gruelling rounds with Viktor Drago, seeing him return to a boxing career after Creed II would need some impressive stakes.

If he did make a comeback in the third film, it would undoubtedly put pressure on Adonis’ relationship with Bianca now that they’re engaged and new parents.

MGM has yet to give Creed III the green light, however.

Creed II was not revealed until January 2016 – two months after Creed was released in cinemas.

So the studio is most likely waiting to see how the sequel performs in the US and worldwide box office before making firm plans for Creed III.

Creed II is in cinemas now.
