Sally (played by Sally Dynevor) has been harassed for weeks by a stalker who sent her obituary to the Weatherfield Gazette and messaged her to open a package, which contained an animal’s heart.
And fans of the ITV soap were left heartbroken after the pressure from the vicious troll finally got to her.
Whilst making a speech at an LGBTQI event, her husband Tim (Joe Duttine) jumped to the conclusion that her stalker was in the crowd filming.
He grabbed her phone and stamped on it but later realised after he had been arrested that he had got the wrong person and the woman was just texting her boyfriend.
When the pair arrived back home, Tim explained he was scared for his wife’s safety.
He said: “I’m scared that someone’s going to try and kill you. Somebody out there’s got it in for you and it’s scaring me.”
Sally also admitted she’s scared that the troll is after her and revealed they had won as she resigned from the council.
“It pains me to say that I hated every minute out there… I don’t want to do it anymore, I’m going to resign from the council. They won,” she said.
Viewers watching at home found the episode heartbreaking as one person wrote on Twitter: “Sally and Tim are breaking my heart.”
“Awww poor Sally and Tim. Don’t let the trolls win #Corrie,” said one fan, whilst another commented: “I really feel for Sally @sallydynevor she doesn’t deserve this #corrie.”
Others, praised the soap for portraying the effects of cyber bullying.
One viewer commented: “Seems like Sally is starting to suffer with anxiety, kills me to watch. Something NOBODY should have to go through. #corrie.”
“Storyline with Sally is very good. Not sure I’ve seen such an accurate portrayal of cyber-stalking on TV before #corrie,” another wrote.
Coronation Street continues Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
