Celtic News: Brendan Rodgers reveals how Man City priced Patrick Roberts out of transfer

Roberts has signed for Celtic on loan for the second year on the trot.

The 20-year-old made a big impact in Scotland last season, scoring 11 goals from 47 games as Rodgers’ side won the Scottish Premiership for the sixth season in a row.

He returned to parent club Manchester City in the summer but Pep Guardiola has again allowed the star to go out on loan.

And Rodgers has revealed it would have taken a huge bid to convince the Citizens to cough up their wing wizard, saying they would even have turned down £30million.

“We would have broken our transfer record for Patrick,” he said.

“We wanted to find the deal that would get him back here.

“But he’s a Manchester City player. We could have offered them £30m and they would have said no.

“They didn’t want to sell. So the best option was to get him back on loan.”

Speaking last week, Celtic legend Chris Sutton praised the deal.

“Patrick Roberts is a fantastic signing. Managing to get him back adds real creativity to the side,” wrote Sutton in his column for The Daily Record.

“I said a couple of weeks ago it was like signing a £10 million player, but given the fees paid out for some dross this week, it’s probably worth an even bigger valuation.

“I’m not sure the whole PR7 marketing campaign isn’t a bit over the top, but that’s the modern game.

“Bottom line is he’s an outstanding addition to the squad and Rodgers was able to supplement that deal with a move for a third striker.”
