The ITV programme had fans on the edge of their seats as they finally found out who raped Trish Winterman.
During the intense finale, DI Alec Hardy (played by David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) had three potential suspects; Clive Lucas (Sebastian Armesto), Ed Burnett (Lenny Henry) and Jim Atwood (Mark Bazeley).
But many fans were shocked to discover it was Clive’s step son Michael Lucas (Deon Lee-Williams) who attacked Trish (Julie Hesmondhalgh).
He confessed to the detectives that Leo Humphries (Chris Mason) helped him to commit the crime.
Viewers were gripped by the whodunnit storyline but were left in tears as many came to the realisation that it was the last episode of Broadchurch.
One person wrote on Twitter: “@BroadchurchTV I am in pieces and smiling through my tears! How dare you make such exquisite drama #broadchurch.”
“Loved #broadchurch tonight don’t know why they’re not making anymore. It’s the best show on British T.V at the moment love #HardyAndMiller,” praised a fan.
A third exclaimed: “NO NO #broadchurch cannot be over, bring it back this instant!”
“I can feel the tears flowing already, its just dawned on me that this is actually the end, #broadchurch is actually over,” another sad viewer wrote.
“Goodbye #Broadchurch. You were one of my all time favourite TV programmes,” one person added.
The eight-week saga concluded with flashbacks showing how Leo groomed Michael to become a rapist.
During the episode, Clive wanted to save his son and begged DS Miller and DI Hardy for him to go down for the crime instead.
But it was also revealed that Leo had previously raped two other women through footage found on his phone.
Broadchurch is available to watch on the ITV Hub now.
