Britain’s Got Talent final 2017: Tokio Myers rakes in 10 million for Simon Cowell

After a thrilling finale and 2.5 million votes, Ant and Dec announced that the winning 2017 act was Tokio, to his complete surprise.

The most-watched TV programme last night, the episode scored five million more viewers than its closest competitor.

An average of 8.2 million viewers tuned in to watch the finale when it aired from 7.30pm until 10.05pm, according to overnight data.

The audience peaked at 10.2 million in the final minutes of the show as the first place act was revealed.

Winning the opportunity to perform at The Royal Variety Performance and a £250,000 prize, 32-year-old Tokio said: “I can’t believe what has just happened!”

Lead judge Simon Cowell gushed: “As a talent, as a person, Tokio right now, this was the most important thing for him, I’m thrilled for him.”

David Walliams added: “It’s fantastic. He is going to be a fantastic ambassador for the show. He oozes talent.

Alesha Dixon said: “I’m so happy! He wears his heart on his sleeve.”

Calling the winner, Amanda Holden said: “Do you know what, I thought he would! It feels as cool as when Diversity won.”

BBC One drama Casualty was the second most-watched show of the evening, airing at 8.25pm and being viewed by 3.2 million.

Nearly half of all TV viewers in the 16-34 demographic tuned in to watch BGT, with 46 per cent of those in that age range watching the show.
