The new Marvel movie may have already been out a week in the UK, but having opened in the US this weekend, it’s now broken a number of records.
According to Box Office Mojo, Black Panther took $ 201 million in its domestic opening, becoming only the fifth film ever to break $ 200 million.
The figure is even bigger than Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, both of which managed to gross over $ 1 billion globally.
The only movie to top Black Panther is Avengers Assemble, which made $ 207 million.
However, extending Black Panther’s $ 201 million to the full four day President’s Day weekend, the movie made around $ 235 million.
In comparison Justice League made just $ 228.6 million domestically over its entire run in US cinemas.
Black Panther’s opening is also the third biggest opening ever, only behind the Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($ 288 million) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($ 241 million).
While critically the film has a CinemaScore of A+ with audiences, a very rare achievement.
And with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%, the film is the best reviewed Marvel movie to date.
Black Panther is out now.
