BBC Weather: SEVERE GALE warning issued as Storm Diana hits the UK

Matt, 42, made his weather predictions today on BBC Breakfast.

He began with a discussion of today’s weather and what BBC viewers would be waking up to.

The meteorologist said: “Foggy and frosty this morning for the start of the day across the UK. The worst of the fog is across England and Wales but it’s all change later because the breeze will be picking up, outbreaks of rain spreading in and eventually it is set to turn milder as well.

“But certainly out there this morning the areas where the fog is at its worst across parts of midlands down into central southern England, there is parts of the Pennines and the northeast of England too as well as east Wales but take it easy on the commute in the morning rush hour.

“Patchy rain in towards south west England and few showers in the east.

“Most start the day dry but rain spreads this morning across south west England and Northern Ireland quite persistent for a time and then into a much central and western England later.

“Temperatures lift up to around 11 to 12 degrees by the end of the afternoon with a bit of late sunshine across the southwest but elsewhere you’re going to finish the day on a fairly soggy note.

“Let’s take a look at what happens for the school pickup and in toward the evening rush hour. Outbreaks of rain, some of which will be heavy, working across a good part of central and eastern England. reaching East Anglia and part of the North Sea coast.

“Rain easing off towards the start of the evening across some parts of Lancashire, greater Manchester and Merseyside but wetter across parts of southeast in towards central areas, across the Penines and in towards the uplands and Snowdonia don’t be surprised if you see a little bit of snow for a time to.”

Matt then looked towards what weather will be emerging later in the day.

“Into tonight that rain will spread across southern areas and then it eventually clears.

“As winds fall temporarily we could see a little bit of mist and fog but the breeze picks up again later in the night,” he explained.

“Rain returns towards many western and southern areas and that will all help to keep temperature levels up higher than they have been in recent days.”

Matt went on to discuss Storm Diana, which will be hitting the country tomorrow.

He said: “The core of the storm is way out to the west but it’s going to have a big influence on our weather through to tomorrow, outbreaks of rain across the country on and off throughout the day.

“Widespread gales, if not severe gales tomorrow.

“Winds in excess of 60 miles per hour in the west, could hit 70 miles an hour across northern Scotland later in the day.”

However, it isn’t all bad news as Wednesday will also see the highest temperatures of the week.

“But at least if anything else it’s going to be the mildest day of the week with temperatures into the teens,” Matt said.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
