BBC weather forecast: Tropical blast to set temperatures rising before rain dampens the UK

Wednesday is set to hot and sunny for much of the UK with heat levels reaching sweltering highs in the lead up to the Bank Holiday weekend.

The best of the sunshine is expected to be across southern and central areas, where temperatures could easily reach a scorching 28 degrees Celsius today.

But there is bad news for northern sections of the UK, as the wet and muggy conditions are likely to continue first thing this morning.

BBC Breakfast meteorologist Alina Jenkins told viewers: “It’s a warm, humid day across central, southern and eastern parts of the UK.

“But a bit of a split across the country because further north and west it’s a fresher feel and we’ve got some outbreaks of rain.”

Today, warm air from the Azores will bring in a subtropical breeze that is going to help push temperatures towards the high teens in the south of the UK.

However, overnight and through to Wednesday morning a weather front brought in fresher air; as a result it is going to feel cooler in Scotland and Northern Ireland in the early hours of the day.

A few downpours will also occur in Glasgow and Belfast, whilst in towns and cities temperatures could reach 16 or 17 degrees Celsius.

During the day the weather front will move southwards, so there will be some areas in central parts of the UK that is going to be cloudy with a few showers.

Although forecasters expect there to be some outbreaks of rain, in Hull, Norwich and London temperatures are rising.

In the capital it could reach a boiling 28 degrees Celsius, whilst both Hull and Norwich hit the high 20s this afternoon.

Tomorrow fresher air from Iceland will reach UK shores, therefore temperatures are going to fall drastically.

Also there is the chance of showers in the north west of Scotland and the south east of England.

What’s more the winds are expected to pick up, especially across western parts of Scotland where it will be gusty at times.

Friday is going to be another cool day everywhere with sunny spells, however, there will be scattered showers in western regions during the morning.

Despite some warm temperatures in the forecast, bookmaker Coral make it odds of 1/4 for rain to fall over the Bank Holiday weekend in London.

Meanwhile, this August is 3/1 to be the wettest on record following some heaving rain last week.

Coral spokesman John Hill said: “The betting suggests although we are set for a damp Bank Holiday weekend, temperatures could reach as high as 30C.

“While we are still seeing lots of support this summer to end as the hottest on record.”
