BBC UK weather forecast: Carol Kirkwood issues SNOW warning as 40MPH gusts HITS Britain

Winds of 40mph will strike the east coast of Scotland on Wednesday, as the highlands in Scotland are hit with snow.

The strongest gusts will push across the northern half of the UK, however, the south should avoid the worst wind chills.

Weather reporter Carol Kirkwood warned BBC Breakfast viewers: “Today we’re going to see some more snow showers.

“But first thing it’s cold, temperatures widely between two and five Celsius. Locally in the south west of England we’re looking at below freezing.”

Wednesday is going to start off quite cloudy and the showers will continue in Northern Ireland and northern England.

Eventually, the wet weather will travel northwards to Scotland, where there is going to be some sleet and snow.

Despite the return of snow, forecasters expect there to be a bit of sunshine today, although it goes hand-in-hand with the rain.

The conditions in England and Wales are likely to improve this afternoon, but the showers will pummel the West Country and the West Midlands.

However, eastern England will be blessed with some sunny spells, which could make its way across southern parts of Scotland.

It is going to feel quite cold this afternoon in Northern Ireland and more wet weather is expected across central and northern areas of Scotland.

Temperatures today to range between six and 10 Celsius, although it will feel cooler than that due to the strengthening winds.

As a matter of fact, it could feel as cold as two degrees in some places when you factor in the wet weather and winds.

Most of the showers should disappear this evening, but clear skies threaten temperatures, as they are likely to tumble.

With the arrival of snow in parts of the UK, leading bookmaker Coral has seen a flurry of bets made for a white Christmas.

In the last 24 hours the bookies have seen a number of bets put on for snow to fall anywhere in the UK on Christmas Day this year.

At the moment the odds are at 1-3 for snowfall on Christmas and Coral also has evens for this month to be the coldest November ever.

The firm makes it a 1-2 chance this month goes on record as the chilliest November in UK history.

Coral’s spokesman John Hill: “Temperatures are dropping fast and that gives hope to those dreaming of a White Christmas this year, which is now odds-on following a flurry of bets over the past few days.”

He added: “It’s set to be chilly end to the year and as a result we have slashed odds on this month finishing as the coldest November on record in the UK.”
