Barcelona News: Lionel Messi heroics for Argentina anger Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo

Messi scored a hat-trick as Argentina beat Ecuador 3-1 last night to book their place in next year’s World Cup.

The Barcelona star rose the fore, with his sublime efforts saving Jorge Sampaoli’s blushes and giving them the chance to do one better than the World Cup in Brazil three years ago.

And Spanish outlet Diario Gol claim the 30-year-old’s heroics for his country have not gone down well with Real Madrid and Portugal star Ronaldo.

The 32-year-old has long competed with Lionel Messi for the game’s individual gongs, with the two players sharing the Ballon d’Or every year for the last decade.

Ronaldo is well primed to win the accolade for the fifth time in his career this year, after firing Real to the La Liga and Champions League titles last term.

That would put him on a par with Messi, who has also scooped the prize five times.

But Diario Gol say Ronaldo is angry at Argentina’s success in overcoming the odds to make the World Cup.

It is said he feels the world is against him and everyone wants the Barcelona star to win the trophy.

Even Fifa president Gianni Infantino admitted Messi is deserving of winning the world’s biggest trophy.

“Messi has yet to win a World Cup,” he said.

“Messi is one of the main and absolute players in football today and it would be unfair to retire without winning a World Cup.”

Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli also hailed Messi after his treble last night.

“Football owed Messi the World Cup,” he said after the game.

“I told the group: Messi did not owe the World Cup to Argentina, but football owed the World Cup to Messi.

“We should help him to be in a new World Cup.

“I was very excited to be in a squad with him.”
