The former Great British Bake Off star presented the award ceremony for the first time after taking over from regular host Graham Norton, who is still in Kiev following the Eurovision Song Contest.
Presenting from London’s Royal Festival Hall, Sue made sure to throw in a range of jokes, but one of her gags received a very awkward reaction from Gillian 48, who squirmed in her seat.
Introducing the next category the 47-year-old told the audience: “Next up we have the award for mini-series. I like my mini-series like I like my relationships; dramatic, intense and with Gillian Anderson in them.”
But The Fall actress didn’t seem too impressed as she was left open-mouthed and turned her head away from the camera.
And viewers watching at home picked up on her facial expressions and took to social media to comment on Sue’s one-liner.
One viewer wrote: “Gillian Anderson did not appreciate that joke!!!! #BAFTATV.”
“Paahahahaha, Gillian’s face says it all,” another added, whilst a third said: “#BAFTATV that caught Gillian Anderson of guard!”
Another person wrote: “‘I like my mini series how I like my relationships: dramatic, intense & with Gillian Anderson in them,’ Don’t we all Sue #BAFTATV.”
In her opening speech, Sue began her string of gags as she made her feelings about the upcoming General Election clear when she launched an attack on Theresa May
She began: “I know what you’re thinking, ‘Not another woman hosting an awards show, when will it end?’
“Whatever happens, I promise to deliver you a strong and stable BAFTAS.”
The presenter also made sure to include a dig at Channel 4 who pinched Bake Off from the BBC.
When talking about the show The Replacement, she said: “A show about how stressful it can be when someone takes over your job. I really couldn’t relate to it.”
