Antiques Roadshow expert Richard Price was on hand to offer up a valuation to the guest who had brought along a watch he’d been gifted 40 years ago.

“Looking at that mark on your wrist is this Rolex your daily watch?” Richard asked.

To which the guest replied: “No, I don’t wear it to work. I wear it when I go out, somewhere special like Antiques Roadshow.”

“How long have you owned it for?” Richard questioned.

“About 40 years, 1978,” he answered before the expert responded: “Did you buy it?”

“Not really,” the guest explained. “My brother bought it for me, he worked for P&O and on his second world cruise I asked if he could get me a watch and that’s what he came back with.

“It was more than I could actually afford so he gave it to me as a gift as long as I paid the duty.”

Richard mused: “A nice gift and very good decision. you could’ve bought yourself something fairly significant but that is a pretty good watch.”

He went on to ask the contributor if he knew what model the timepiece was.

“It’s a Submariner isn’t it?” the guest pondered.

Richard revealed: “It’s not, no, because the Submariner has a rotatable bezel and this one is a two button Chronograph this is a Cosmograph which is Rolex’s really lovely stopwatch.

“Because it’s such a rare model they are highly desirable and collectable. I’m going to tell you that its actually quite a useful sum of money.”

The guest laughed: “I told my son I’d left it to him in my will and he went away and came back and said it was very collectable but he didn’t tell me it was worth a lot of money.”

“I bet he didn’t,” Richard retorted. “I wonder if he discovered what it was worth. He gave you no clue at all?”

Then came the big reveal as Richard announced how much it was worth as he said: “In this state, at auction £25,000 to £30,000.”

“Don’t die too soon!” Richard chuckled as the guest replied: “I’ll be scared to wear it now. Wow.”

“It’s a lovely thing and it’s a great watch,” Richard added.

“It’s lovely to wear, I feel even better now,” the contributor admitted.

Those watching at home took to Twitter to comment on the shocking valuation.

One exclaimed: “I think that man was flabbergasted by the value of his watch! #AntiquesRoadshow.”

“Nice Roly on #antiquesroadshow . Imagine owing a watch for 25 years sms thinking it’s a sub,” a second mused while a third shared: “Rolex watch from his brother. Nice brother. #antiquesroadshow.”

Antiques Roadshow continues Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
