Anthony Crolla makes world title claim after beating Ricky Burns

The Manchester-born boxer enjoyed a memorable night in his hometown as the former lightweight champion beat Ricky Burns a former champion at super-lightweight, super featherweight and lightweight.

The 30-year-old took the bout on an unanimous points decision, with all three judges ringside scoring the fight in his favour.

Coming off the back of two defeats against WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares, Crolla is keen to prove he belongs alongside the world’s best.

Speaking after his win over Burns, Crolla said: “I thought I had definitely done enough, but I knew how much energy this man had.

“People were saying would he tire coming doing to lightweight, but I never thought that would happen.

“I owe these people (the Manchester crowd) another world title.

“We have no problem going to Glasgow for a rematch at some point, but we will see what is next in the pipeline.”

Burns, however, saw the fight differently, believing he shaded it and suggested a rematch should be considered.

He said: “I thought it was close I thought I’d done enough and was landing the cleaner shots.

“I’m a bit gutted but if Eddie (Hearn) and Anthony are up for it, let’s go to Scotland for a rematch.

“Let’s do it. I’m sorry Anthony but I thought I got this one.”

On the undercard, Lewis Ritson won the British title, but Sam Eggington relinquished his European belt.
